The dust created by cutting, grinding, or drilling these materials can contain crystalline silica particles. These dust particles are very small and can travel deep into the lungs. Breathing in even small amounts over time can cause silicosis, lung cancer, or COPD, and has been linked to other diseases, including kidney disease. Silicosis is incurable and can be deadly. The WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations require employers to develop an exposure control plan for Silica if workers have a risk of exposure.
