HEALTH AND SAFETY PROGRAMS DEVELOPMENT WORKSAFEBC, CONSTRUCTION SAFETY MANAGEMENT PLAN VANCOUVER BC & VICTORIA BC

https://www.ggsafetyconsulting.com/safety-programs.html

ALL BUSINESSES IN B.C. ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO HAVE A WRITTEN OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY PROGRAM IN PLACE.

FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN YOUR COMPANY RECEIVING FINES, PENALTIES, SANCTIONS OR STOP WORK ORDERS.

According to the Workers Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, it’s the employer’s responsibility to implement an occupational health and safety (OHS) program to prevent employee workplace injury and disease. OHS safety programs in British Columbia must meet certain safety standards. The employer must exercise due diligence in taking steps to meet those standards.

You must have a 'formal' health and safety program if you have either a workforce of 20 or more workers and at least one workplace where there is a moderate or high risk of injury and when you have a workforce of 50 or more workers. Small businesses or employers with fewer than 20 workers need a health and safety program too. These programs can be simpler. We refer to them as "informal" health and safety programs.

Health and safety programs are aimed at ensuring workers are protected, risks are minimized, and a healthy and safe workplace is maintained. All employers must establish some form of health and safety program at the workplace. The type of program you need depends on the number of workers you have and the risks associated with their work. Though every workplace and every occupational health and safety (OHS) program are different, there are some key elements common to all programs.

Our professional and certified Health and Safety Consultants are able to develop your small or large business a complete written occupational health and safety program specific to your companies operations, specific to your industry and which will meet with all WorkSafeBC legislative requirements.

Supervisor Responsibilities and Due Diligence Training in Vancouver BC. Supervisors play an important role in promoting and maintaining workplace safety. Their words and actions demonstrate how they view and value health and safety. The supervisor's attitude influences how workers approach and practice safety on the job; to them the supervisor's attitude reflects the company's values. A supervisor is anyone who instructs, directs, and controls workers as they carry out their work tasks. This could include owners, managers, superintendents, charge hands, lead hands, foremen, department heads, journeymen, and trainers. Supervisors are well-positioned to be safety champions. Effective supervisors are intentional and purposeful in promoting health and safety. They should perform regular safety activities, such as safety inspections, observations, accident and incident investigations, or crew safety talks. Other activities may be linked to annual departmental safety plans.

Due Diligence is taking all reasonable care to protect the well-being of employees and co-workers. Employers and Supervisors in BC have certain health and safety responsibilities in the workplace to ensure the health and safety of their employees.

Our 4 hour course will cover WorkSafeBC regulatory requirements for employers, supervisors and employees. This course will also cover employer, supervisor and employee responsibilities, Bill C-45, OHSR regulations, record keeping, liability protection, definition and purpose of due diligence, communication methods, strategic planning, WorkSafeBC Occupational Safety Officer responsibilities and how to prevent accidents and incidents in the workplace.

Successful completion of a written theory exam is required for completion of this program.

LOCK OUT TAG OUT TRAINING CERTIFICATION VANCOUVER BC & VICTORIA BC

LOCK OUT TRAINING TAG OUT TRAINING CERTIFICATION WORKSAFEBC VANCOUVER BC & VICTORIA BC
(https://www.ggsafetyconsulting.com/lock-out-tag-out-training.html)

Lock Out / Tag Out Training in Vancouver BC. Every year, workers in British Columbia are killed or seriously injured because machinery or equipment was not properly locked out. For example, accidents where workers are caught in machinery can result in severed fingers, crushed limbs, or death. Accidents can be prevented if machinery is locked out properly before obstructions are cleared or other maintenance work is done. Electrical shock, burns, and electrocution can also result if electrical equipment is not properly locked out.

Equipment that is not de-energized and locked out can unexpectedly start when maintenance work is being done, which can result in serious injuries. De-energization is the removing of energy from machinery or equipment. Lockout is the use of lock(s) to render machinery or equipment inoperable or to isolate an energy source in accordance with a written procedure. Maintenance is any work performed to keep machinery or equipment in a safe operating condition. This includes installing, repairing, cleaning, and lubricating the equipment, as well as clearing obstructions to the normal flow of material.

This half day 4 hour course, will explain the importance of lock-out in protecting workers who operate machinery and equipment in BC.  This course will also cover specific procedures on how to protect employees from unexpected energization or start-up of machinery and equipment, or the release of hazardous energy during service or maintenance activities.

Successful completion of a written theory exam is required for the completion of this program.

CONFINED SPACE ENTRY AWARENESS TRAINING WORKSAFEBC VANCOUVER BC & VICTORIA BC
(
https://www.ggsafetyconsulting.com/confined-space-entry-training.html)

Confined Space Entry Awareness Training in Vancouver BC. Confined spaces in the workplace pose a significant risk of injury and death. Hazards in confined spaces can result in fire, explosion, unconsciousness, asphyxiation, or drowning. Confined space incidents can happen suddenly, often without any warning that something is wrong. Employers must take the necessary steps to ensure worker safety around confined spaces. A confined space is an enclosed or partially enclosed area that is big enough for a worker to enter. The space may be enclosed on all sides (for example, a bin or tank), or as few as two sides (for example, an enclosed conveyor). Confined spaces are not designed for someone to work in regularly. They are places where entry may be needed from time to time for inspection, cleaning, maintenance, or repair.

The Occupational Health and Safety Regulation in BC requires the employer must ensure that each confined space in the workplace is identified, and determine whether any such space will require entry by a worker, either in scheduled work activities or as a result of foreseeable system failures or other emergencies. The employer must also ensure that all confined space hazards are eliminated or minimized and that work is performed in a safe manner.

This full day 8 hour course, engages and instructs participants, in properly identifying and assessing confined spaces, ensuring entry plans are in place and the plans are followed, and work performed within a confined is completed safely and efficiently.

Successful completion of a written theory exam and practical evaluation is required for completion of this program.

BULLYING AND HARASSMENT TRAINING WORKSAFEBC VANCOUVER BC & VICTORIA BC (www.ggsafetyconsulting.com)

Bullying and Harassment Training in Vancouver BC. In November 2013, the British Columbia’s Workers Compensation Act was amended to include three new policies addressing workplace bullying and harassment.  Sections 115, 116 and 117 of the Act set out the general duties of employers, workers and supervisors.

All employers in BC are required to train their Supervisors and Employees on recognizing the potential for bullying and harassment, responding to bullying and harassment, and procedures on reporting bullying and harassment incidents.

Bullying and harassment in the workplace can take many forms, including verbal aggression, personal attacks, and other intimidating or humiliating behaviors. If workplace bullying and harassment is not addressed, it can lead to lost productivity, anxiety, and depression. An employer has a duty to ensure the health and safety of its workers, and as a result, employers must take all reasonable steps to prevent where possible, or otherwise minimize, workplace bullying and harassment. Workplace bullying and harassment can lead to injury, illness or death.

Our 4-hour Bullying and Harassment Training Course in Vancouver BC also includes sections on sexual harassment (human rights code) in the workplace.

Our health and safety training courses in Vancouver BC are facilitated by educated and credited health and safety consultants experienced in the field of occupational health and safety and in the practical application and integration of health and safety consulting principles into your work activities. We require at least a minimum of 6 participants to conduct a course. JOINT HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMITTEE TRAINING VANCOUVER BC & VICTORIA BC (https://www.ggsafetyconsulting.com/joint-health-and-safety-committee-training.html)

Joint Health and Safety Committee Training Vancouver BC. As of April 03, 2017 WorkSafeBC requires that all potential joint committee members in BC must receive 8 hours of instruction and training. GG Health and Safety Consulting is proud to present our 8 hour joint health and safety committee (JOSH Committee) course which meets and exceeds all new WorkSafeBC requirements.

The joint health and safety committee supports the employer's duty to ensure a healthy and safe workplace. The joint committee brings together representatives of the employer and the workers, to identify and help resolve health and safety issues in the workplace. The joint committee plays an important role in your occupational health and safety program, giving workers and employers a way to work together to identify and find solutions to workplace health and safety issues. Any workplace with 20 or more employees must have a health and safety committee, while those with between 10 and 19 workers must have a designated worker health and safety representative. This course aims at helping participants to identify and interpret JHSC member's functions and duties and to carry out their responsibilities to promote workplace health and safety.

This full day 8 hour course, will assist employers and participants on how to start-up a committee at your workplace, how to effectively implement a JHSC, duties and functions of members and as a team, and the OHSR regulation. Our course also covers the following topics as required by WorkSafeBC:

  • The duties and functions of a joint committee
  • The rules of procedure of the joint committee
  • The requirements around conducting incident investigations
  • The requirements around conducting regular workplace inspections, and how to make regular inspections
  • The requirements around responding to a refusal of unsafe work
  • The requirements for annually evaluating the joint committee

Successful completion of a written theory exam is required for completion of this program.

Our health and safety training courses in Vancouver BC are facilitated by educated and credited health and safety consultants experienced in the field of occupational health and safety and in the practical application and integration of health and safety consulting principles into your work activities. We require at least a minimum of 6 participants to conduct a course. All our safety training courses are conducted directly at our clients facility - we come to you.

Fall Protection Training Certification Vancouver BC (https://www.ggsafetyconsulting.com/fall-protection-training.html)

Fall Protection Training in Vancouver BC. Falls from heights, even relatively low elevations, can result in serious injuries. The proper use of fall protection equipment, in addition to planning, supervision, and training, can reduce or eliminate the risk of falling. Anyone who routinely works at elevations is susceptible to sustaining serious injuries, even death, as a result of inadequate or missing fall protection. For workers on an unguarded platform more than 3 m (10 ft.) from the ground to those constructing high-rise buildings, proper fall protection is an important issue and mandatory under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations in BC.

The Regulation is clear: fall protection must be used whenever a worker is at risk of falling 3 m or more. In addition, before workers begin a job, they must be thoroughly trained in the proper use of the fall protection system they will be using. WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation requires workers in BC to use a fall protection system where they could fall at least 3 m (10 ft.) or where a fall from a lesser height may result in serious injury.

This half day 4 hour fall protection training course engages and instructs workers, who use fall arrest and fall restraint equipment and systems, on the proper methods to ensure safety. Topics covered will be OHSR legislation, introduction, fall protection hierarchy, guardrail systems, control zone systems, fall restraint systems, fall arrest systems,  inspections of equipment, anchor criteria, full body harness and fitting, lanyards, shock absorber, connectors, carabiners, donning practice and partner check.

Successful completion of a practical evaluation and written theory exam is required for completion of this program.

worksafebc certificate of recognition cor in bc

Read Now

The Partners Program, also known as the certificate of recognition (COR), encourages employers to create an occupational health and safety management system that goes beyond the current legal requirements. The voluntary program recognizes employers that are proactive about improving workplace safety, and dedicated to continual improvement. Employers earn a certificate of recognition when they implement an occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) that has successfully passed an audit and met WorkSafeBC's standards. As part of the COR program, employers whose occupational health and safety management systems have passed an audit and are in good standing with WorkSafeBC are considered for financial incentives. Incentive payments are calculated using your company's assessable payroll and the base rate for your classification unit (CU) for the incentive year.

TYPES OF COR

The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) COR is awarded to employers that implement and maintain an OHSMS that exceeds regulatory requirements. This OHSMS should be comprehensive and based on a "Plan, Do, Check, Act" cycle focused on continual improvement. For more information about the elements of an OHSMS, see Occupational health & safety management systems.

Injury Management/Return-to-Work (RTW) COR. The Return-to-Work (RTW) COR certification program remains frozen pending the creation of a new standard, audit tool, and revised auditor training. This means that no new employers will be eligible for a Return-to-work COR. Employers currently RTW-certified can continue participating in the program until further notice. Auditing requirements for these employers remain the same. For more information, contact your certifying partner.

BENEFITS OF COR

Safe and healthy workplace — COR-certified employers demonstrate leadership, commitment to continual improvement, and dedication to worker health and safety. Possessing a certificate of recognition demonstrates to your workers, your industry peers, and the public that you value a workplace that's safe and secure from injury, illness, and disease. This commitment translates into a safer and healthier workforce and work environment, which helps ensure your workers go home safely every day.

Competitive advantage — Having a certificate of recognition reflects your commitment to workplace health and safety, which may make it easier to hire and keep workers. It can also give you an advantage when it comes to work contracts. As clients become more socially-conscious and discerning in choosing who to work with, it's important to make the most of every opportunity that will give your company a competitive edge.

Financial savings — Achieving a certificate of recognition can also have positive financial impacts. When you maintain a safe and healthy workplace with few worker injuries and shorter claims duration, your company's WorkSafeBC experience rating will improve. This will eventually lead to a discount on your WorkSafeBC premiums, which can result in significant savings.

THE COR PROCESS

A certifying partner is an organization that, through agreement with WorkSafeBC, helps guide employers toward a Certificate of Recognition (COR), which certifies that the employer has implemented a safety management system that meets established standards as verified by an audit. Certifying partners are typically safety associations recognized by WorkSafeBC as having in-depth industry knowledge that is used to promote and develop workplace health and safety; there are different certifying partners for different industries. Once an employer registers with a certifying partner, the employer is first helped to implement an effective health and safety management system, then to complete and pass a qualifying audit.

In order to qualify for COR, a certification audit is completed by an external auditor for large employers (20 or more full-time employees) or by an internal auditor for small employers (fewer than 20 full-time employees). To pass this audit, a total score of 80 per cent must be attained, and a minimum of 50 per cent must be scored on each audit element. This certification audit is valid for three years. In the following two years, the same audit process is used for internal or maintenance audits. The main purpose of the internal/maintenance audit is to identify and correct deficiencies in the management system.

WHAT OHS PROGRAMS NEED TO BE INCLUDED IN YOUR HEALTH AND SAFETY PROGRAM IN BC?

Read Now

The different types of health and safety policies and procedures which need to be included in your OHS program depends upon the nature of your work, the hazard rating of your industry and how large your organization is. However, WorkSafeBC does state that your Occupational health and Safety Program in BC needs to be designed a certain way as per the OHSR Regulations.

According to the Workers Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation, it’s the employer’s responsibility to implement an occupational health and safety (OHS) program to prevent employee workplace injury and disease. OHS programs in British Columbia must meet certain safety standards. The employer must exercise due diligence in taking steps to meet those standards.

Our professional and certified Health and Safety Consultants are able to develop your small or large business a complete written occupational health and safety program specific to your companies operations, specific to your industry and which will meet with all WorkSafeBC legislative requirements

WorkSafeBC OHSR Section 3.3 - Contents of Program

The occupational health and safety program must be designed to prevent injuries and occupational diseases, and without limiting the generality of the foregoing, the program must include:
(a) a statement of the employer's aims and the responsibilities of the employer, supervisors and workers,
(b) provision for the regular inspection of premises, equipment, work methods and work practices, at appropriate intervals, to ensure that prompt action is undertaken to correct any hazardous conditions found,
(c) appropriate written instructions, available for reference by all workers, to supplement this Occupational Health and Safety Regulation,
(d) provision for holding periodic management meetings for the purpose of reviewing health and safety activities and incident trends, and for the determination of necessary courses of action,
(e) provision for the prompt investigation of incidents to determine the action necessary to prevent their recurrence,
(f) the maintenance of records and statistics, including reports of inspections and incident investigations, with provision for making this information available to the joint committee or worker health and safety representative, as applicable and, upon request, to an officer, the union representing the workers at the workplace or, if there is no union, the workers at the workplace, and
(g) provision by the employer for the instruction and supervision of workers in the safe performance of their work.
